Selection of Supervised Backgrounds, following standard show style

Worked with Art Director to develop/pitch a new look-and-feel/style for dream sequences in Season 2 Episode 12 "Who's Afraid of Boomsday Again?" The "Richard Scarry" dream style was requested, and my team worked together to implement it. The other dream sequence (heavily referencing "Thelma and Louise") needed to feel more gritty and adult, prompting me to suggest taking inspiration from Frank Miller's "Hell and Back - A Sin City Love Story" (particularly the use of more washed out color where applicable, and the solid shadow fills). This inspiration was approved, and my team worked together to implement it.

Farzar (Season 1)

Worked with Supervising Director to expand on the color style of Brickleberry and Paradise PD, and bring it to a whole new galaxy! Worked with Supervising Director and Show Creators to refine the Main Cast Lineup. Created a comprehensive Background Paint and Color Design Style Guide for inhouse and outsource artists. Created and pitched "look boards" for previously unestablished treatments, environments, and props, many of which were utilized in the show. One of the biggest departures was how we treated the skies-- I suggested we take inspiration from the painted backgrounds in the 1973 "Lost In Space" animated series. This inspiration was approved, and my team worked together to implement it.

When first meeting with the creators, I asked them what the atmosphere inside of the dome was like. We landed on a constant "perfect day" with blue skies and white clouds, just like the Earth the humans once knew! This gives great contrast to the otherwise alien skyscape!
Painted by Emily Sadowski

I came to Emily with a rough sketch pulling heavily from the likes of Tron and Blade Runner-- I was set on a shining neon city to contrast the dusty fire-lit slums around it, and she executed that amazingly!

I asked for a"Crystal Cathedral" influence by making the pieces of ceiling above the thrones glass, and I also asked for the floor to be given a "terrazzo tile" speckled texture.
The rusty, crusty slums!
The rusty, crusty slums!
The creators to have different colored skies to help define different areas on the planet. The Supervising Director and I decided that we could treat it like weather patterns or pollution! Here we see the skies of the Human Utopia/Alien Slums blending into the Intellectoid Realm in the distance.
The creators wanted a Skeletor influence, and another sky color to really differentiate Bazarack's lair from everywhere else! I pitched the idea of a swirling evil vortex constantly perched over the lair, and they approved the idea!
Bazarack's lair was a MOOD, and we didn't want it to overwhelm a battlescene. So the artists and I worked on having the sky and environment fade from "swirling evil vortex" to something more neutral!

Fun Example of Specific Color Direction: When needing some eerie lighting inside Bazarack's throneroom, I pitched the idea of incandescent insects and the goo they may produce that could fill the core of the planet, or be squeezed out into the sconces!
The creators really wanted to push the idea of an idyllic alien canopy compared to the "Very Bad Forest" lurking underneath. I pitched the idea of pulling inspiration from the deep sea for the forest (with lots of glows and milky outlines against dark backgrounds), and they approved it!
I pitched a "deep sea" inspiration for our "Very Bad Forest," and it was approved! I directed the artist to use dark fills and textures, and play with glowing objects and coloring the lines of things to have them stand against the darkness.
